Pediatric Symposium
ICAHN and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital is offering this day-long, no-cost symposium geared for nurses, EMS providers, respiratory therapists, and college students. This event is open to the public.
Registration opens at 7:30 AM and the event begins at 8:00 AM. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Learning Objectives:
- List the common life-threatening complications of trauma in the pediatric age group.
- Differentiate between respiratory illnesses commonly infecting children and their management.
- Describe the management of the pediatric patient with a tracheostomy.
- List the initial stabilization steps following the delivery of the newborn.

Meet the Speakers:
Terry Cuellar, MN, RN, CCRN, Pediatric Readiness Outreach Coordinator
Terry is the Pediatric Outreach Coordinator at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in Saint Louis MO. He has been a pediatric nurse for over 35 years (20 years at Cardinal Glennon) and his experience includes working in PICU, Neonatal/Pediatric Transport, PICU nurse educator, NICU, and Pediatric/EMS Outreach. He earned my BSN at the University of MO – Columbia, and his Master of Nursing at the University of FL – Gainesville. In his current position, he brings pediatric education to community hospitals, fire districts and ambulance districts within a 120 radius of Saint Louis and has an affinity for critical access hospitals.
Melanie Biver, RRT, BS, STARS Program Liaison
Melanie is a STARS program liaison at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. The STARS program creates emergency plans for children with medical complexities for EMS and tertiary hospitals so that they may have a better understanding of the children. The program also helps to educate EMS providers in complex medical topics and well as other pediatric topics. Melanie started with the STARS program in August of 2023. Prior to joining STARS, I worked as a Respiratory Therapist on the Cardinal Glennon Transport Team for 11 years. And worked at Cardinal Glennon as an RT for about 2 years before working with the Transport Team and the Respiratory department. I received my degree in Respiratory Therapy from SWIC in Belleville, IL. She also has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Illinois College of Jacksonville.
Nicholas Salzman, EMT-P, FP-C, BA, STARS Program Coordinator
Nick has worked in EMS since 2005 and became a paramedic in 2008. He has a variety of pre-hospital experience including urban, suburban, rural, transport, 911, and flight EMS. Additional roles in those jobs included providing education, rendering training, and fulfilling support/officer roles. In 2018 he joined the STARS Program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and has helped grow and develop the program since then. He is the current Coordinator for the STARS Program which has been implemented at three hospitals. Nick is also actively involved in multiple PPN domains, include Prehospital and Education domains and the PPN CYSHCN/CMC taskforce. He is also involved in MO EMSC and frequently leads prehospital education sessions.
Contact Hours
Nurses, EMS providers, and RT can earn 6.00 contact hours upon successful completion of the program. The attendee must stay for the full duration of the program and fill out the survey in order to obtain credit.
