The ICAHN membership is comprised of the 55 small and rural hospitals located across the state of Illinois. Together, Illinois critical access hospitals provide emergency, diagnostic, and primary care to 1.1 million rural residents living in 60 percent of the counties in Illinois. Illinois CAHs have 10,250 employees, 1,250 hospital beds, and combined gross patient revenues of $2.1 billion dollars.

A CAH is a licensed acute care hospital with 25 inpatient beds or less, maintains an average length of stay of no more than four days and provides 24/7 emergency services. A CAH must be located in a designated rural area and certified by the Medicare program. CAHs have many active outpatient programs, inpatient swing bed programs that provide skilled nursing care, and may operate rural health clinics and medical practices. In turn, CAHs receive 101 percent cost-based reimbursement from Medicare and 100 percent outpatient cost based reimbursement for Medicaid patients.
