“To honor colleagues who exemplify the mission of the Hospital Sisters and our commitment to our patients, HSHS St. Francis Hospital has instituted the Torch Awards,” stated Patti Fischer, President/CEO at HSHS St. Francis Hospital. Fischer stated, “As we celebrate our successes, it’s important to be reminded of the importance of our core values. These values support our Franciscan healing ministry. Through the Torch Award process we will have another opportunity to recognize outstanding staff members who embody these core values. Congratulations to Jan Thomack who is our first Torch Award winner.”
The Torch Award Committee announced that Thomack, R.N./Emergency Department, was awarded the first Torch Award for Respect. Eight colleagues were nominated for the award. The colleague who nominated Jan wrote, “She gives respectful observation of situations that show respect to the person she is talking to. She gives total concentration and visual contact to those she is speaking to. This is a sign of respect and the patient knows that she is listening and confirming what they are saying. I witnessed Jan on several occasions being calm and respectful to patients. She has a calming voice and personality that makes people feel comfortable.” Thomack received a Torch Award plaque, a reserved parking space, a $300 gift card, and gift basket.
Nominations for the Torch Award are submitted by colleagues. A committee consisting of colleagues from a variety of hospital departments manages the nominations and the selection/award process. Torch Awards in each category of Respect, Care, Competence and Joy are awarded quarterly.
